  • The domestic dog descends from meat-eating mammals

As humans settled in semi and permanent habitation sites the wolf followed and changed its unruly ways.


This afforded the opportunity for selective breeding. Through many generations of this discriminating breeding the domestic dog was created. It seems that the dog’s ability to form social relationships has helped it to succeed as a species. So the first dogs were in reality self-domesticated wolves. Our ancestors found these animals to be extremely useful.

Dogs were involved in warfare, sports and agriculture.


The role of the dog continues to evolve and expand, because of the canine’s natural pack mentality the dog will warn pack members of potential danger. Dogs are willing to become members of human packs and with their superior senses of hearing and smell they warn people of intruders.

Canines demonstrate loyalty and devotion to their human families which is very close to the human ideation of love and friendship. This bonding relationship leads to dogs being viewed as family members. Although canines have proven their worth in a variety of different roles it seems they are most coveted for the wonderful companionship they provide.
